Anna & Karen

at the program

"first steps"

This File Under Construction

Last update: 4 August 1999.

Pictures taken at Greengate School, where Karen was enrolled as part of the infant program known as "first steps." After Karen was diagnosed with (mild) cerebral palsy, she was placed in this program. There were typically 2 sessions per week. These sessions consisted of group activities, with some individual therapy. Anna was also allowed to attend, though she did not need, nor was she given any therapy.
The highlight of the session for Anna and Karen was "circle time." This proceeded more or less as follows. A small snack (perhaps a cookie or two) was served along with some juice. Then everyone got to knock on a toy house to wake up the stuffed animal inside. Then every child got to give the animal a hug. This was followed by singing and activity. Examples include: taking turns hitting a "big red drum" with everyone singing along. Handing out individual paper cut-outs of a school bus and singing the "wheels go round and round..." "Twinkle twinkle little star" "A B C D..." "Itsy bitsy spider climbed up the waterspout..." etc. When each song was complete, there was much clapping and cheering.

These pictures taken in between November 1998 and July, 1999. The photos were taken by First Steps staff.
